What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to help balance the flow of energy, or qi, and promote healing. When the flow of vital energy is blocked, it can lead to imbalances that manifest as physical symptoms, mental health problems, or emotional distress.

Acupuncture is a safe and effective treatment option for a wide range of conditions. It can be used to address chronic pain, stress/anxiety, insomnia, seasonal allergies, and digestive problems. It is also a popular treatment for hormonal imbalances that can cause problems with fertility and menopause.

How Does Acupuncture Work?

Acupuncture guides the body towards homeostasis, where healing takes place on a deep level in a natural and organic manner. Very fine needles are inserted into specific points along meridian pathways that traverse the body and correspond with the proper functioning of the organs, musculoskeletal structure, and internal physiological systems.

Pain and disease are mirrored through the meridians of the body. Acupuncture treatments properly align these meridians and restore them to their original functioning. The result is true balance.

Whole-Body Benefits of Acupuncture

The strategic placement of a few acupuncture needles can elicit a profound response from your body, effectively giving your entire system a rejuvenating "reboot." Your body's natural healing mechanisms kick into high gear, promoting circulation and restoring the flow of energy throughout your entire being.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Therapies

Trigger point acupuncture, cupping, guasha, and moxibustion are techniques that are often coordinated with acupuncture to further eliminate pain, release myofascial congestion, and promote the flow of blood, Qi, and lymph.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a deep-tissue healing modality used in traditional Chinese medicine. Cups are applied to the skin using suction and placed in strategic locations, often on specific acupuncture points, or directly on or around the site of pain.

Cupping not only helps alleviate muscle spasms and tension but also stimulates Qi and blood circulation, facilitating the body's natural healing processes. This powerful treatment has a wide range of applications, such as detoxification, sports injury recovery, headache relief, and more.

Moxibustion

Moxibustion is a traditional healing technique that involves burning moxa, or mugwort, close to the acupuncture meridians to help move stagnant energy. Moxa, with its ability to increase circulation and lymphatic flow, is a naturally detoxifying and effective treatment for pain relief.

During a healing session with our Licensed Acupuncturist, Gregor Bertram, he may use a technique called “Indirect Moxibustion,” where a cigar-shaped tube of moxa is lit and burned close to the acupuncture meridian.

Dry Needling (Trigger Point Acupuncture)

Dry needling (trigger point acupuncture) involves direct manipulation of tightly contracted muscles, or knots, to ease tension and reduce pain. Trigger points are highly sensitive, tender areas that develop in your muscles and can also cause referred pain that is felt elsewhere in the body.

During a dry needling session, acupuncture needles are inserted into trigger points to encourage the cramped muscles to release into a relaxed state. This treatment helps facilitate healing and restore normal function.

  • The initial session and consultation are $220. Follow-up acupuncture treatments are $180.

  • Currently, we are not contracted with any insurance companies but are happy to print out a superbill that you can submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

  • Refrain from eating a large meal before or after your visit. Wear clothing that is loose and comfortable. If you are coming from work, please feel welcome to bring a change of clothes and you can change clothing here prior to your visit. Please do not consume alcohol or recreational drugs prior to your visit as they may affect your ability to assess the treatment.

  • For the most part, patients feel calm and sleepy when the needles are in place. Some report feeling either heavier or lighter and many fall asleep during treatment.

  • For acute conditions, patients may experience results within a few sessions. Chronic health issues may require 12 or more treatments for significant changes to settle in. This question is best addressed during your first session.

  • You should expect your acupuncture session to be a very relaxing and pain-free experience. Acupuncture needles are in no way similar to needles from a shot or an injection. Most acupuncture needles are up to 100 times smaller than the typical medical syringe and do not feel painful when they are inserted. It is normal to feel a slight pinch as the needles are tapped in. Acupuncture needles are fine and flexible and no thicker than a strand of hair. A slight ache or heaviness near the needle placement is normal and indicative that the body is engaging productively and that energy in your body is being activated. If you experience any prolonged pinching, burning, or sharpness, please let your practitioner know so that the placement of the needle can be adjusted.

  • Dry Needling, also known as trigger point acupuncture, involves direct manipulation of tightly contracted muscles, or knots, that can cause pain throughout the body. Acupuncture needles are used to ease tension and encourage cramped muscles to release into a relaxed state.

  • Acupuncture offers a holistic approach to supporting the lymphatic system. From a traditional Chinese medicine perspective, lymphatic stagnation may point to deeper energetic imbalances and acupuncture aims to restore balance to the body as a whole.

By stimulating specific points on the body, acupuncture can help regulate energy flow and activate the body's natural healing mechanisms. Improved circulation, reduced inflammation, and enhanced immune function are just a few ways acupuncture can support your lymphatic health and overall well-being.

  • Yes, you can schedule a massage appointment the same day you get acupuncture.

Acupuncture and massage are complementary therapies that address both the physical and energetic aspects of the body. When received in back-to-back sessions, the individual benefits of each therapy can be amplified.

Acupuncture can be done either before or after a massage. Your therapist will assess your condition to determine which order best suits your needs.
