Acupuncture

Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice that involves the insertion of fine needles into specific points on the body. It can be used to address not only the physical effects of cancer but also the emotional and energetic impacts. Studies suggest acupuncture may help manage pain, nausea, fatigue, and neuropathy, as well as relax patients and increase feelings of well-being.

Acupuncture Treatments for Cancer Patients

60 minute treatment with Gregor Bertram, Licensed Acupuncturist & Herbalist

Acupuncture can complement conventional cancer care by supporting the body’s natural defenses and healing mechanisms. The strategic placement of a few acupuncture needles can elicit a profound response from your body, stimulating the nervous system, promoting circulation, and restoring the flow of energy.

Your initial acupuncture session will start with a comprehensive discussion of your health concerns, medical history, and existing treatment plan. Based on this consultation, we will determine the appropriate approach and techniques that best support your treatment goals.

Managing Cancer Symptoms and Side Effects

Cancer disrupts a person's life on multiple levels. Acupuncture can help cancer patients regain a sense of well-being by addressing a broad range of treatment-related symptoms and side effects, including:

  • Pain

  • Peripheral neuropathy

  • Cancer fatigue

  • Chemotherapy-related sickness (nausea and vomiting)

  • Anxiety and stress

  • Mood and energy changes

  • Insomnia

  • Weight loss

  • Hot flashes

Rebuilding After Chemo

Patients who have undergone chemotherapy and/or radiation may experience lingering fatigue, weakness, cold sensitivity, or low energy. Chemo and radiation are designed to target and destroy cancer cells but can harm healthy cells in the process. This collateral damage can weaken the immune system, leaving patients feeling depleted and vulnerable to infection. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine may help support recovery after treatment by restoring vital energy and strengthening the immune system.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be used during and after chemotherapy to help manage side effects and stimulate immune function. It plays a supportive role in long-term recovery, helping to restore internal balance, rebuild strength, and improve patients’ overall quality of life.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Traditional cancer therapies place significant strain on the body, especially its detoxification systems. Herbal medicine can help support the organs responsible for toxin removal and simultaneously address key areas like digestive health, energy levels, and immune function.

Please note: Some herbs can interact with medications. It is important to inform both your oncologist and TCM practitioner about all medications and supplements you are currently taking.

Acupuncture FAQs

  • Acupuncture is a safe and effective therapy when performed by a qualified, licensed acupuncture practitioner.

Our treatments are carefully adapted to each individual’s condition and existing treatment plan, providing a non-invasive way to support healing and symptom management.

  • You should expect your acupuncture session to be a very relaxing and pain-free experience. For the most part, patients feel calm and sleepy when the needles are in place. Some report feeling either heavier or lighter, and many fall asleep during treatment.

Acupuncture needles are in no way similar to needles from a shot or an injection. Most acupuncture needles are up to 100 times smaller than the typical medical syringe. It is normal to feel a slight pinch as the needles are tapped in or a slight ache or heaviness near the needle placement. If you experience any prolonged pinching, burning, or sharpness, please let your practitioner know so that the placement of the needle can be adjusted.

  • For acute conditions, patients may experience results within a few sessions. Chronic health issues may require 12 or more treatments for significant changes to settle in. This question is best addressed during your first session.

Oncology Massage Therapy

Oncology massages at Arogya weave together elements of Swedish massage, acupressure, reflexology, Reiki, and craniosacral therapy.

Prior to scheduling, please consult your healthcare provider to ensure massage therapy is appropriate for your current condition.

Therapeutic Benefits of Oncology Massage

Oncology massage aims to provide relief from a range of treatment-related symptoms, such as pain, nausea, fatigue, and swelling, while simultaneously promoting relaxation, better sleep, and improved circulation.

This gentle, supportive therapy may help patients feel better able to cope with the challenges of cancer treatment and recovery.

Massage Modifications for Cancer Patients

Oncology massage techniques are carefully adapted to address the unique needs and considerations of cancer patients.

Our therapists modify pressure, positioning, and stroke direction, taking into account ongoing treatments, tumor location, surgical scars, medical devices, and any treatment-induced changes like swelling or skin sensitivity.
